John is from Newton, MA, where he began playing the piano at age 5, but he has lived most of this life on the west coast. Musically he's been all over too, with stints in bluegrass, jazz, and blues bands, and even some cocktail piano. Though a contradancer since 1985, his turn to traditional music was kindled by exposure to the brilliant folk musicians of Vermont in the mid 90's. He played his first contradance in 1996, and has been fortunate to play for some great dances (and with fine musicians) since that time.
John's instruments with Amazon Creek include Accordion and Guitar (DADGAD tuning), in addition to piano. His style is as eclectic as his musical background, and even in what he charitably refers to as "late middle age", he's still soaking up as much as he can.
When not playing music, John is a Research Scientist, specializing in problems of adolescent development. He works for Oregon Research Institue in Eugene.
